Facebook Still Seems On Track To 'Disappear' In 4 Years From Now

To be honest, I’m not sure I’d write it again today.
It had a catchy title and some good substance to my arguments, so it ended up generating a lot of page views.  It also came out at a time when the hype over the upcoming Facebook FB +0.31% (FB) IPO was at a fever pitch.  Back then, people were saying that Facebook would be the next Google GOOG +0.49%(GOOG) and would certainly surpass $100 billion in market value as soon as it IPO’ed.  We don’t seem to recall now but many predicted that Facebook’s stock would go to $60 – 75/share immediately post-IPO.
In reality, it hit the mid-$40s and then dropped like a stone until bottoming out at $17 and now being around $23.
The biggest problem I have with my old post is that I tried to articulate why both Google and Facebook “might” disappear in 5 years.  That’s too much for one post.  I should have split them up.  So, today, I just want to revisit this year-old post and only focus on Facebook.  I’ll try to do Google in the next few weeks if I have time (but – long story short – I don’t think Google’s going away any time soon).
The other problem with the post was the use of “disappear” in the headline.  Many readers took this to mean that I thought both were going bankrupt.  That’s not going to happen clearly.  I said in the post that I meant that they would “disappear” in the sense that Yahoo YHOO +1.71% (YHOO) has disappeared.  By that I mean that Yahoo is a shadow of its former self in terms of its perceived importance by many.  Anyone who reads my stuff knows that I’m long Yahoo and love the company and new CEO Marissa Mayer.  I think they can do great things still.  But one of the reasons I got so bullish on them is that public market investors completely lost interest in the company and totally discounted the stock over the last 4 years compared to its underlying fundamentals or to its cooler rivals like Facebook.

EVEN THOUGH

FACEBOOK IS MOST USED WEbSITE ...

I worry for Justin Bieber: Channing Tatum
Actor Channing Tatum fears teen singer Justin Bieber will struggle with the responsibilities of adulthood because he lacks the experience of the real world, especially since he has spent his growing up years in the spotlight.

Tatum worries the "Baby" hitmaker's early success could cripple him in later life, reports contactmusic.com.

"I don't remember who said it, but I do believe that whatever age you become famous, you end up staying that age. Because from that point you're not asked to be a normal citizen. I broke through at 24 or 25. I had lived a pretty diverse life. When I was finally making money, I knew exactly what I needed," the 33-year-old toldVanity Fair magazine.

"I worry about Bieber, man. That kid's wildly talented," added Tatum.

He hopes for the best for Bieber, who has been in news for the wrong reasons lately.

"I hope he doesn't fall down into the usual ways of (famous) young kids because it's so hard for someone to be responsible when they're not asked to be. We're not asked to do things ourselves. You have someone there with a coffee. (They say,) 'You want food? I'll get you food.'"

Google Facial Recognition Patent: Users May Be Able To Make A Face Instead Of Entering A Password

As we've seen this week with Motorola's password tattoos and pills announcement and Apple's fingerprint scanner rumor, tech companies are seeking out new ways to enable users to easily access their devices and accounts without having to remember a phrase or code. With Google's facial recognition patent, published online Tuesday, it appears the corporation has devised its own alternative.
According to the U.S. patent, first filed in June 2012, Google's facial recognitionmethod would require users to make a predetermined facial gesture that would then be scanned and compared to a previously captured photo for authentication. Each time a device asks for identification, the user would have to make a face that includes movement of an eye, eyebrow, mouth area, forehead area or nose.
Suggested gestures range from a "wink" or "eyebrow movement" to a "nose wrinkle" or "tongue protrusion."
While facial recognition authentication is nothing new, Google's requirement for a user to make a unique gesture seems to be a new attempt to thwart unauthorized users from accessing devices that don't belong to them. Google's patent even notes how some of the techniques could prevent "prevent erroneous authentication caused by spoofing."

Bill Gates And Bono: 'Partners In Crime' Discuss Their Collaboration For Good

Bill Gates And Bono: 'Partners In Crime' Discuss Their Collaboration For Good

The richest man in the world and the biggest rock star in the world made a rare joint appearance Wednesday at the second annual Forbes 400 Summit on Philanthropy, discussing the genesis of their partnership, friendship and their goals as they work together going forward.
Bill Gates and Bono joined approximately 150 billionaires, near-billionaires, philanthropist and leading social entrepreneurs, as well as two Nobel Peace Prize winners, all of whom spent the day sharing ideas and seeking solutions to extreme poverty.
And what did this duo have to say? Over the course of a free-wheeling hour, which I moderated and encompassed more than a half-dozen questions from others in the room, ranging from Paul Tudor Jones II to Indian billionaire Prakash Hindura, quite a lot.http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=x9Lf6Cw6Xac
