Ohio man faces 329 charges in missing women case
CLEVELAND: A man accused of holding threewomen captive in his home for a decade has been indicted on 329 charges including kidnapping and rape, prosecutors said.

A Cuyahoga County grand jury returned the indictment on Friday against Ariel Castro, a former school bus driver fired last fall.

The grand jury charged Castro with one count of aggravated murder, saying he purposely caused the unlawful termination of a pregnancy.

Castro is accused of kidnapping Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight and holding them captive along with a 6-year-old girl he fathered with Berry.

He also was indicted on charges including 139 counts of rape, 177 counts of kidnapping and multiple counts of gross sexual imposition and felonious assault.

Barack Obama vows to push on with progressive agenda

President Barack Obama vowed Saturday to press on with his progressive second-term agenda in a speech that touched on the key issues he is expected to tackle in the coming year.
After winning re-election last year, Obama has struck a notably more activist tone, won several victories over Republicans and delighted liberal supporters, many of whom were disappointed after his first four years in office.
In the first official weekly address since he was inaugurated for this second term, Obama targeted immigration reform, gun control, taxes for the wealthy and cracking down on Wall Street abuses as areas of concern.
He said his job was to broaden and strengthen the American middle class. "It means reforming our immigration system, and keeping our children safe from the menace of gun violence. And it means bringing down our deficit in a balanced way by making necessary reforms and asking every American to pay their fair share," he said.
Obama is set to announce plans for immigration reforms this week and has already published a series of proposals on gun control, using public outrage in the wake of last year's elementary school shooting massacre in Newtown.

Wesley Carrington, UK Man, Finds $156,000 In Roman Gold Coins On First Time Using Metal Detector

Some people spend a lifetime trying to amass a fortune through hard work and guile. For one British man, it took only 20 minutes in a field with a metal detector -- the first 20 minutes he had ever used such a machine.
According to the St. Albans & Harpenden Review, Wesley Carrington took his newly bought metal detector out into a field near St. Albans in Hertfordshire, England, last October. After finding a spoon and then a half penny, Carrington's machine beeped a third time, and he dug seven inches down to uncover a coin that was gold in color with a Roman figure on it.
As it turns out, the gold coloring was actually gold, the coin was an ancient Roman solidus, and there were 158 more buried with it, a hoard with an estimated worth of 100,000 pounds sterling, or $156,000, according to The Daily Mail.
Carrington found 55 of the coins that first night, stopping only because it got too dark outside to continue. A group of experts later returned to discover 104 more coins at the site. All in all, the hoard is believed to be one of the largest collections of Roman gold coins ever found in England, according to the BBC. St. Albans District Councillor Mike Wakely hailed it as "an exciting find of national significance," the outlet reports.
The statistical likelihood of finding a hoard of such import with so little effort is difficult to calculate, much less grasp.

Why did the British steal all our country's wealth?

India is famous for all the best costliest jewelery in the whole world. Semi precious stones and gold. Yet the British came to India, took away everything we had, the wealth of India...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koh-i-Noor

http://www.diamondtutorials.com/articles…

Now the Queen wears it on the top of her awful head and they don't even want to return it back!!

Isn't it pathetic, they just robbed the wealth from other countries.

Especially India, the land of riches and wealth.
The world learnt how to adorn jewelery only from India.
Yet the Brits came and robbed most of what we had.

What do you think?

No, This Is Not How The Human Face Might Look In 100,000 Years

The artist, Nickolay Lamm, also makes predictions for how we would look in 60,000 and 20,000 years. You know, if you have a short timeframe. (Update: Parmy notes that the predictions were made by an Alan Kwan, a scientist. I can’t find anything about him on Google GOOG +1.75%.)
"Lamm says this is “one possible timeline,” where, thanks to zygotic genome engineering technology, our future selves would have the ability to control human biology and human evolution in much the same way we control electrons today.
Lamm speaks of “wresting control” of the human form from natural evolution and bending human biology to suit our needs.  The illustrations were inspired by conversations with Dr. Alan Kwan, who holds a PhD in computational genomics from Washington University."

US govt can't access Google servers directly: CEO Larry Page /ET\ Tech Companies Concede to Surveillance Program

US govt can't access Google servers directly: CEO Larry Page

Caught in the controversy around mass surveillance program run by the powerfulNational Security Agency in the US, Google on Saturday denied that it allowed NSA sleuths direct access to its servers.

In a post, titled "What the ...?", on the company's official blog, CEO Larry Page said Google had not joined any surveillance programme run by the US.

"We have not joined any program that would give the US government—or any other government—direct access to our servers. Indeed, the US government does not have direct access or a 'back door' to the information stored in our data centres. We had not heard of a program called PRISM until yesterday," he wrote in a post that was also bylined by Google's chief legal officer David Drummond.

On Friday, the Washington Post and the Guardian reported that NSA had direct access to data belonging to nine technology companies - Google, AOL, Apple, Yahoo, Microsoft, Skype, Facebook, YouTube and PalTalk. The report said that NSA sleuths could monitor or access every mail, video message and status update, etc made by the users of the services run by these nine companies.

Tech Companies Concede to Surveillance Program

When government officials came to Silicon Valley to demand easier ways for the world’s largest Internet companies to turn over user data as part of a secret surveillance program, the companies bristled. In the end, though, many cooperated at least a bit.

Twitter
declined to make it easier for the government. But other companies were more compliant, according to people briefed on the negotiations. They opened discussions with national security officials about developing technical methods to more efficiently and securely share the personal data of foreign users in response to lawful government requests. And in some cases, they changed their computer systems to do so.
The negotiations shed a light on how Internet companies, increasingly at the center of people’s personal lives, interact with the spy agencies that look to their vast trove of information — e-mails, videos, online chats, photos and search queries — for intelligence. They illustrate how intricately the government and tech companies work together, and the depth of their behind-the-scenes transactions

Nobody is listening to your telephone calls: Obama
WASHINGTON: President Barack Obamavigorously defended sweeping secret surveillance into America's phone records and foreigners' internet use, declaring "we have to make choices as a society."

Taking questions on Friday from reporters at a health care event in San Jose, California, Obama said, "It's important to recognize that you can't have 100 per cent security and also then have 100 per cent privacy and zero inconvenience."

It was revealed late Wednesday that the national security agency has been collecting the phone records of hundreds of millions of US phone customers. The leaked document first reported by the Guardian newspaper gave the NSA authority to collect from all of Verizon's land and mobile customers, but intelligence experts said the program swept up the records of other phone companies too.

Another secret program revealed on Thursday scours the internet usage of foreign nationals overseas who use any of nine US-based internet providers such as Microsoft and Google.

Internet spying: Britain getting data from US agency
LONDON: The UK has been secretly gathering communications data from American internet giants with the help of fellow spooks at the US national security agency, Guardian newspaper reported on Friday, a demonstration of the international scope of America's top-secret espionage program.

Guardian said it had seen documents showing how the British signals intelligence agencyGCHQ has had access to America's "PRISM" electronic eavesdropping system since at least June 2010, adding that the data had generated nearly 200 intelligence reports over the past year.

GCHQ declined to comment on the story on Friday, saying only that it takes its legal obligations "very seriously".

Guardian said evidence for GCHQ's involvement came from the same 41-page Powerpoint presentation cited on Thursday by both that paper and Washington Post as the basis for their reports on PRISM, a heretofore-unknown eavesdropping program used to collect emails, documents, audio, video, and other data from major internet companies including Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Skype,YouTube, and Apple.
Sound plays a major role for parents naming their children
Researchers have now found that male names are far more likely to contain broad, larger sounding vowels that are emphasised when spoken while female names are smaller sounding in comparison.

This effect results in names, such as Thomas or Tom being considered more masculine and more suitable for boys, whereas names such as Emily are considered feminine and given to girls.

Researchers from Queen Mary, University of London analysed the most popular baby names from the last decade to decode the link between the sounds in a name and the sex.

They examined a 10-year dataset of the most popular names from England, Australia and the United States, which represents nearly a third of all births during that time period (15 million names from around 45 million births). They used recognised techniques from linguistics to determine whether names contained large or small vowel sounds.

The data shows that larger sounding names are a popular choice for parents when it comes to naming their sons, who might associate the name size with masculine qualities.

In mammals, including humans, deeper sounding vocalisations are typically associated with larger individuals and high frequencies with smaller ones.

Names that sound ridiculous in English

I will never get used to writing an email that starts with “Dear Joke”, or “Hello Freek”, or better yet, “Taco, I would like to introduce you to Harm”! How about good ol’ Mr. Fokker. You may have seen him on the silver screen but let me tell you, the Fokkers are alive and kicking (and numerous) here in the Netherlands! Which brings me to the title and essential thesis of this entry: Dutch people like names that sound down-right ridiculous in English.
I pity the innocent Dutch child that grows up in the farming fields of Friesland, and then decides to spread their wings and start a life in an anglophone country, named: Aart van de Vaart. Yes, I cannot help and giggle like a school-girl ever time I hear that last name (FYI: Vaart  is pronounced very similar to the English word “fart”). Call me juvenile, but you cannot disagree that many a Dutch name sound simply silly in English.
And yet, we haven’t even got to the very long list of Dutch first names that start with the letter “J” and are essentially unpronounceable to anglophones. We’ve got Jaap and JarnoJoost andJoop, and don’t forget our good friends JurgenJoord and Jelle (and the list goes on…I won’t even get started on names that start with “Sj”!) Yes, these names may work very well in the lowlands, but something is definitely lost in translation. Huh? Your Dutch parents named you what?!

Do women cheat for fun?
Does the fairer sex cheat for fun? A question many have blindly quizzed. Now we find out the truth behind this.

Considered as the epitome of being extremelyemotional beings and in our culture the home binders and makers, does or can a woman cheat on her spouse or partner for fun? Well, this is a question that not many can be affirmative about but it has caused a lot of buzz all around. Withwomen being objectified in many ways, it wouldn't come as a surprise to many. Arti Mehtaa Psychologist says, "I feel it's a person specific thing. We all have been made familiar with the term that men cheat. I feel that now with many casual relations coming up our culture is changing.

It's not a healthy base for any relation. If this is where you are heading, it's better to sit and communicate with your spouse or partner rather than finding emotional warmth elsewhere." Most women cheat because they crave for emotional warmth and attention from their partners. The lack of this makes them want it from another source that is easily available and also gives them the attention and emotional support they need.

American Indian graduate fined $1,000 for wearing a feather on her mortarboard
ATMORE (Alabama): An American Indian student says she's being fined $1,000 for wearing a feather on her mortarboard when she graduated from high school in south Alabama in late May.

Chelsey Ramer tells WPMI-TV that she feels like she's being discriminated against by her alma mater, Escambia Academy in Atmore.

The 17-year-old is part of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, and she says she wore a feather at graduation last month to honor her heritage.

The school now is making Ramer pay a $1,000 fine to get her diploma and official transcript. She's accused of violating school policy.

A school contract says students and staff are not allowed to wear extra items during graduation unless they're approved in advance by the administration.

Shale gas supply to boost India-US relationship

The US government’s decision to allow export of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to countries, which do not have a free-trade agreement with that country, is good news for India. The policy shift was apparent when the US department of energy allowed a Texas facility to export LNG. The US has the world’s largest reserve of LNG, made possible by new drilling technologies. Though Japan, which has invested heavily in Texas, will be the immediate beneficiary, India too can look forward to tapping the US’ LNG potential, given its status as a non-FTA country. Since India has always been on the lookout for new energy sources to meet its ever-increasing demand for power, the US decision should be seen as a godsend.

Beware Of Facebook And Google

US admits to snooping on Facebook, Google data of overseas users

WASHINGTON: The US government has been secretly collecting information on foreigners overseas for nearly six years from the nation's largest internet companies like Google, Facebook and, most recently, Apple, in search of national security threats, the director of national intelligence confirmed.

The confirmation of the classified program came just hours after government officials acknowledged a separate seven-year effort to sweep up records of telephone calls inside the United States. Together, the unfolding revelations opened a window into the growth of government surveillance that began under theBush administration after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and has clearly been embraced and even expanded under the Obama administration.

Government officials defended the two surveillance initiatives as authorized under law, known to Congress and necessary to guard the country against terrorist threats. But an array of civil liberties advocates and libertarian conservatives said the disclosures provided the most detailed confirmation yet of what has been long suspected about what the critics call an alarming and ever-widening surveillance state.

In December 2005, The New York Times revealed the existence of elements of that program, setting off a debate about civil liberties and the rule of law. But in early 2007, Alberto R. Gonzales, then the attorney general, announced that after months of extensive negotiation, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court had approved "innovative" and "complex" orders bringing the surveillance programs under its authority.
